Gloria Anzaldúa: Writing as Liberation I Sunday, May 4 I Online I 12:00 - 2:00 PM US EST
Instructor: Annu Dahiya, PhD
Penned in 1980, Gloria Anzaldúa’s “Speaking in Tongues: A Letter to Third World Women Writers” is a powerful call to write ourselves into existence. Anzaldúa directly addresses the personal, economic, and political challenges faced by poor women of color when trying to become writers. She acknowledges these obstacles only to emphasize that, despite them, women must write because writing is an act of survival, resistance, and self-creation.
In this discussion-based workshop, we will read and reflect on Anzaldúa’s letter together, exploring how writing can be a means of transformation. Along with reflecting on her words, we will engage in guided writing exercises that serve as catalysts for participants to reimagine their relationship to writing. This workshop is open to anyone who is curious about writing. No prior experience is necessary, only a willingness to engage with the power of language and possibility.
SLIDING SCALE: Philosophy for liberation is committed to making education accessible. A sliding-scale is available for students who are BIPOC [black, indigenous, and people of color] and/or anyone in economic need. For 50% off, use promo code: WRITINGFORLIBERATION50. For 75% off, use code WRITINGFORLIBERATION75.
Refund Policy: Participants will receive a full refund up to 3 days before the event.
