In 1978, Audre Lorde gave a talk at Mount Holyoke College titled "The Uses of the Erotic." In this essay/speech, she explores the force and resource she calls "the erotic" in our lives. Far from solely referring to sexuality, Lorde describes the erotic as a kind of life force and knowledge rooted in a deep sense of intuition and knowing. "The erotic," she writes, "is a measure between the beginnings of our sense of self and the chaos of our strongest feelings," a kind of creative energy that resides deep within each of us that can be tapped into for both personal and social transformation. In this teach-in, we will read this powerful text together to explore what we can learn about ourselves rooted in Lorde's poetic philosophy of feeling. How can we reimagine our relationships to ourselves and each other through the erotic?
